WORKSHOP - Stitching a bird picture Instructor: Julie Leggett Art Phone: 07305594084 Email: julieleggettart@gmail.com www.Julieleggettart.com Price of the workshop: £75.00 About me: I am a mixed media artist using a variety of mediums. I have incorporated textiles and stitch into my art more recently finding it a very therapeutic outlet. I completed a Fine Art Qualification in 1999. Stitching skills have been enhanced later via a stitching collective, which I have been a part of for four years. I love teaching and sharing my skills and helping others gain confidence through creating. By experimenting with embroidery and mixed media textiles, my aim is to inspire and support to enable a creative stitching experience for beginners to more experienced stitchers. A one-day workshop in the lovely village of Bonsall on the edge of the Peak District 10am -1600 BONSALL VILLAGE HALL, Yeoman Street, Bonsall, Matlock DE4 2AA. When you arrive, we will be working in the upstairs space. REFRESHMENTS: Tea, coffee, cake, and biscuits will be provided. THE WORKSHOP The workshop will aim at using basic hand stitch, but if anyone would like to incorporate some freestyle machine stitch into their piece, they may bring along their own sewing machine (PAT tested) with a freestyle attachment foot. I will show you the basic set up and freestyle technique if required. I hope to create a relaxing and sociable atmosphere where we can interact, meet, and have an enjoyable sewing day learning new skills and gaining confidence in our approach to stitching. The day will begin with an introduction and the opportunity to see some samples of stitching work completed around ‘Birds’. This will give you some inspiration for your stitch piece. The aim will be to put together a unique piece to incorporate a bird and a tree. We will use a colour wheel to assist with colour choices for your theme. We will spend some time around putting together our design and choosing our materials. I will create a bird stencil that will be available to use if you would like to. A few basic stitches will be demonstrated i.e., running stitch /kantha, with techniques of creating different effects with the same basic stitch. Feather stitch, French knots, stem stitch and cross stitch. There will be a variety of reference books for you to look at to give you ideas and inspiration, along with access to heat erasing pens, tracing paper and bonding materials. I live in the beautiful village of Bonsall on the edge of the Peak District

I work in all areas of mixed media, paint , collage, pastels, and textiles. A new collection of mixed media artwork is continually being worked on for 2023-24.

This year my painting will be reaching out with some oil pieces, as well as acrylic and mixed media.  Interior and still life subjects still draw me in, with a look into my own interior life.

My textiles gear towards portraits, birds and religious and spiritual icons - I like both organic and more formal stitching.  It continues to be a busy period for restocking and working hard as many pieces flew to new homes and stitching new ones takes a little time.  Watch out for a new ranges of, interesting mixed media and stitched pieces for 2023.

SKETCHING to aid both my stitching and mixed media artwork
A sketchbook is a must for Julie. Once she has captured an object, she studies its shape, size and form, orchestrating the patterns to give a visual picture, and provides a way of constructing a new composition to work with. I really enjoy the spontaneity of this process: building the picture up using the elements of stitch, collage, paint, mark-making and drawing.   The gallery shows Julie's ongoing textile work.
