UNIQUE THREADS

Unique Threads

Our newly formed stitching group, 'Unique Threads,' held its inaugural session on Monday, May 12th, in the charming community of Bonsall. This gathering marked the beginning of an exciting journey for local stitching enthusiasts and newcomers alike, fostering creativity and camaraderie among participants. Julie, a long-time resident of Bonsall with a passion for textile arts, along with Jackie, both are talented stitchers with a wealth of experience and are set to begin this initiative. Both Julie and Jackie bring their unique perspectives and expertise to the group, offering instruction in a diverse array of embroidery techniques and styles, which will cater to stitchers of all skill levels, from beginners eager to learn the basics to experienced crafters looking to refine their skills or explore new methods. The sessions will be held monthly, providing ample opportunity for participants to engage with one another, share ideas, and collaborate on projects. Each meeting will feature a specific theme or technique, allowing members to delve deeply into different aspects of embroidery. From traditional hand-embroidery methods to contemporary machine techniques, the group aims to cover a broad spectrum of embroidery practices. Furthermore, members will be encouraged to bring their own projects, fostering an environment of support and inspiration where everyone can showcase their work and receive constructive feedback. In addition to the hands-on learning experience, 'Unique Threads' plans to host guest speakers to inspire the group. This will not only enhance the educational aspect of the sessions but also strengthen the community ties among local artists and crafters. As we embark on this creative venture, we look forward to seeing how 'Unique Threads' will evolve, cultivating a space where creativity flourishes and lasting friendships are formed through the art of stitching.

Blue Tit

Our first session was led by Jackie (Howard), with future planned group sessions covering a series of workshops on birds with a 'Blue Tit' flying in for the first month. Take a look of the images we took of the evening.

Owl

On June 9th, Julie will be at the helm of an exciting and creative session, where she will guide participants through the process of crafting a beautifully stitched piece that prominently features an owl, a symbol often associated with wisdom and mystery. This workshop will not only focus on the final product but also delve into the techniques and materials that will be employed throughout the creative journey. To start, we will create an intricate patchwork background using bonda web, a versatile fusible web that allows for easy layering and adhesion of fabric pieces. Participants be provided with a selection of fabrics, enabling them to personalize their project that will resonate with their individual styles. The patchwork technique will involve cutting, arranging, and fusing the fabric pieces together, resulting in a rich and textured backdrop that enhances the overall aesthetic of the piece. Once the background is established, we will move on to the main attraction—the owl itself. Julie will demonstrate the technique of applique, where we will carefully cut out the owl shape from fabric provided and attach it to the stitched piece. This technique not only adds dimension to the artwork but also allows for creative expression. To ensure that the owl stands out and captures the viewer's attention, we will use simple black work techniques to detail the owl's features. This will include outlining the eyes, beak, and feathers with black thread, which will provide contrast against the fabric and bring the owl to life. The use of black work is a traditional embroidery technique that adds depth and intricacy, making the owl a focal point of the piece. Additionally, we will incorporate star stitches into the background to create a whimsical and enchanting atmosphere. These star stitches will not only complement the owl but also add a playful element to the overall composition, evoking a sense of night sky or magical woodland. Participants will learn how to execute these stitches effectively, ensuring that they can replicate the technique in future projects. By the end of the session, each participant will walk away with a unique and personal piece of art that showcases their creativity and newly acquired skills. This workshop promises to be an enriching experience, filled with learning, artistic expression, and the joy of crafting alongside fellow enthusiasts.

The next session is on Monday 9th June 7pm-9pm and will be held at Bonsall Village Hall at the top of Clatterway (next to the Fountain Cafe). DE4 2AY
