I love to do quick spontaneous drawings and enjoy capturing the things around me. In the last year or two I have started using concertina sketchbooks which are ideal for using on site – I am most comfortable sketching directly outside. I don’t draw in my sketch book to scale, but rather home in on certain observations that I come across – so I may draw the allotment and see a plant or vegetable that I am interested in; this then can end up the same size as the buildings! It’s great fun and gives the abstract feel that I like. I often just follow line without looking directly at the objects – the results can be surprising and gets away from a contrived exacting form.
